Conversation becomes an interface
OpenAI introduced GPT-6 with Intelligent UI on October 7, 2026. ChatGPT can now organize certain responses as charts, comparisons, buttons, forms and interactive tools rather than a single text block.
The system chooses a format based on the request: a diagram can explain a mechanism, a calculator can help divide expenses, and a simple question can still receive a plain answer. The ambition is to shorten the path between asking and doing.
How it works
OpenAI describes a library of native components plus a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it. This helps elements appear progressively without waiting for the entire response to finish.
The model was trained to make decisions about layout, visuals and interaction. The company acknowledges that its design judgment and consistency still need improvement.
Speed and rollout
In the company's own evaluation, GPT-6 Instant begins responding to web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. It is a vendor-reported benchmark rather than a promise for every query.
The rollout began with paid ChatGPT plans and expanded to other tiers. Feature availability can vary with plan, platform and the stage of release.
What it means for builders
Intelligent UI points toward software that adapts its interface to user intent. But teams still need to test correctness, accessibility and the scope of any actions a generated tool can perform.
Visual polish does not make inaccurate calculations or unsafe interactions acceptable. Reliability and clear controls remain essential as conversational products become more interactive.
